What Jemly collects, why, who sees it, and how to take it back.

Last updated 12 October 2026

The short version

1. Who we are

Jemly is a flashcard app for learning Spanish and French. It is run by Jemar, a sole trader trading as Jemly ("we", "us"), who is the "controller" of your personal information under UK data protection law.

Email: info@jemly.co.uk

2. What we collect and why

WhatWhenWhy
Your cards, decks, sentences, photos, review history, streaks and settingsAlways created on your device. Copied to us only if you have an account. To run the app and, with an account, keep your work safe and in sync between devices.
Email address and passwordWhen you create an account. To sign you in and let you reset a forgotten password. We never see your password: it is stored only as a secure, one-way scrambled value by our sign-in provider.
Technical data (IP address, browser and device type, time of request)Whenever the app loads or syncs. Our hosting and database providers handle this to deliver the app, keep it secure and prevent abuse. We do not use it to identify or profile you.
Messages you send us, including feedback sent from the app (with the app version and your device type, and your email only if you add it)If you contact support or use Send feedback. To reply, fix problems and improve Jemly. Feedback is not linked to your study content.

We do not collect your location, contacts, microphone or camera. When you add a photo to a card, you choose the file yourself and it is stored only as part of your own card.

3. Our legal reasons for using your information

4. Who we share it with

We only share information with companies that help us run Jemly, and only as needed. They act on our instructions.

Some of these providers may handle data outside the UK. Where they do, we rely on the safeguards the law allows (for example, an adequacy decision or approved standard contract terms).

We never sell your personal information, and we never share it for advertising.

5. How long we keep it

Your account information is kept until you delete your account. After you delete it, our database provider may keep encrypted backups for a short time (up to 7 days) before they are removed. Information that stays only on your device is yours: clearing the app's data removes it.

6. Your rights

You can ask us to:

Do it yourself in the app: Profile > Data > Download backup exports everything, and Profile > Data > Delete all my data permanently deletes your cards, your cloud copy and your account. You can also email us at info@jemly.co.uk. We will reply within one month.

If you are unhappy with how we handle your information, you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint. We would appreciate the chance to put things right first.

7. Cookies and local storage

Jemly uses your browser's storage (and a sign-in token if you have an account) only to make the app work: to remember your cards, progress, settings and sign-in. It uses no advertising or tracking cookies, so there is no cookie banner. If we ever add analytics, we will update this policy and ask first where the law requires.

Anonymous usage counts. Unless you turn it off (Profile > Share anonymous usage counts), or your browser sends a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal, the app adds 1 to a daily total when certain things happen, such as the app being opened, a first session being finished, or the upgrade screen being viewed. It also counts, in the same anonymous way, how often each screen is opened and each button is tapped (only the name of the screen or button, for example "start-review", never what you typed or which card). We store only the event name, an optional short word such as the feature name, the date and the running total. We do not store or send any identifier, name, email, IP address, device information, or any of your cards or words, and the totals cannot be traced back to a person. We use them only to see whether Jemly is working and to decide what to improve.

8. Children

Jemly is for people aged 13 and over. We follow the principles of the ICO's Children's Code: no advertising, no tracking, and the most private settings by default. If you think a child under 13 has created an account, email us and we will delete it.

9. Keeping your information safe

Everything travels over encrypted connections. Each account can only reach its own data, and we limit who at our providers can access the system. No online service is perfectly secure; if a breach affects your personal information we will tell you and the regulator where the law requires.

10. Changes to this policy

If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect. The date at the top shows when it was last updated.
